Nerdosterone II

bahhh, opened up the old beast and it was worse than I thought. Turns out I have a 256 and a 512 not 3 256's as I thought. To make matters worse my motherboard is a crappy design. You have to take out the video card before you can get at the Ram. yuck.

Take out GPU (video card), take out ram, put ram 1 in slot 1, put in GPU, restart machine to test.

Wash rinse repeat with both ram in all 3 slots.

The final word....

The 512 is dead.

Oh well. I if can just get it to limp along for another couple of months I will get a new machine. This time I will try and build my own. After reading my butt for the last 6 months I figure I am ready to give it a try.

So sorry to hear about your computer - so frustrating. Mom

Oh man.... can I empathize with you. I'm still limping along with your old computer. I hate the thought of putting money into a new one but at the same time I am grateful that I got yours for free and it has served it's purpose for so many years. I think it's time to start looking for a new one.

Sorry about your luck..... there is something nagging in the back of my head though, about motherboards in general not liking the idea of having two different ram chip sizes at the same time, and which slot the biggerone has to be in. You tried just running the 512 without the 256?

yeah, I thought of that too. Tried the 512 alone in a few different slots. No luck.
